Figure 18—1. Schematic image of the embryonic brain. Early in development, three primary vesicles (prosencephalon, mesencephalon, rhombencephalon) form at the rostral end of the neural tube (19 mm inset). Subsequently, the three vesicles give rise to the five major divisions of the brain. The telencephalon and diencephalon arise from the forebrain (prosencephalon) and the metencephalon and myelencephalon arise form the hindbrain (rhombencephalon).
