Transverse section through the T-6 spinal cord segment (Luxol Blue stain). The central canal (asterisk) is surrounded by butterfly-shaped gray matter. Blue stained white matter is superficial to the gray matter. The white matter is divided into three funiculi (regions): dorsal (DF), lateral (LF), and ventral (VF). Boundaries between funiculi are where dorsal roots enter (DR) and ventral roots exit (VR). The spinal cord is enveloped by meninges, the most superficial being dura mater. The denticulate ligament links the spinal cord to the dura mater.
