A drawing of the ultrastructure of a myelin node from the CNS (left) and the PNS (right). In the CNS, the myelin node is exposed to the extracellular space. In the PNS, the node is covered by cytoplasmic processes from adjacent lemmocytes. The term paranode refers to the cytoplasmic region of the myelin internode that is adjacent to the node.
