Brain Ventricular System

Dorsal and lateral views of canine brain ventricles. A lateral ventricle is within each cerebral hemisphere. The third ventricle (III) is in the diencephalon. The fourth ventricle (IV) is in both the metencephalon and myelencephalon. Third and fourth ventricles are connected by a mesencephalic aqueduct located within the mesencephalon. Cerebrospinal fluid exits the fourth ventricle bilaterally through a lateral recess & foramen. A continuation of the ventricular system that extends into the olfactory bulb is variably open.
